Library Road Maps: Patrons in the Driver’s Seat
May 16, 2014
Keynote: We > Me (Download) (Audio .mp3)
The shortest poem in the English language is especially true in librarianship. We are each individually tasked with serving our communities but what happens when we include our community members in our services? By utilizing patron driven acquisitions, user created programming, community centered strategic planning, and service models that include the public in planning, we can expand our programs and services in a way that is most meaningful to our communities. After all, who knows better about our patron’s needs than the patrons themselves? This session will discuss the successes and failures of deep community involvement in librarianship in a discussion group format.

3-D Modeling, Scanning, and Printing Service in an Academic Library Environment (Download)
Since 2012, our library has operated a 3-D printing service primarily using Makerbot Replicator printers. In that time, we have gained experience in the many aspects of establishing a successful service, including: -costs of operations and pricing of a service -staffing levels needed -related services e.g. 3-D modeling and scanning assistance -collaborations with academic departments to purchase equipment and provide services -outreach and marketing the service -supporting research (including at the undergraduate level) -supporting classroom instruction -siting the service, environmental health and nuisance concerns -beyond 3-D pringing: other related fabrication technologies The session will draw on our experience to provide recommendations on requirements and desirables for establishing and maintaining a viable 3-D print service.

Fine-Tuning the User Experience: Integration of Blackboard and LibGuides (Download)
At many institutions, students are required to use the Blackboard online course management system. Often, links are provided to library resources through Blackboard. An extension of this service was developed a few years ago that enabled the delivery of course-related content at the point-of-need by utilizing LibGuides. The desired outcome was that students would have an improved research experience, produce better student work, steer students away from simple, uniformed Google searching to quality databases, and improve usage of library resources. This presentation gives background information on the process and details the steps necessary to implement the integration of these two resources along with efforts at assessment.

Navigating for Today’s Learners: Redesigning Library Instruction to Meet Students’ Needs (Download)
For the most part in libraries, ebooks exist as licensed products that we can provide to our members only under terms that impede access and at great expense. What if libraries could use ebooks not as products, but as tools? What if our ebook collections reflected the cultural output of our communities, not just the best-sellers list?

PDA for Public Libraries – Whose Library Is It Anyway? (Download) (Audio .mp3)
The Embedded Librarian in the Learning Management System
What is PDA – Patron Driven Acquisitions – and how is it practiced in our public libraries, the West Lafayette Public Library in particular? With over a year of experience with a PDA program at the West Lafayette Public Library (begun after preliminary discussions with Purdue University Libraries, a leader in the PDA program in academic libraries), librarian Nick Schenkel will present his findings and thoughts about the importance of PDA to public library patrons, professional librarians and other library staff.
